Flight training is the perfect career change for those who are sick of the tedious 9-5 grind; pilots not only enjoy lucrative prospects, they also get to indulge in the freedom and excitement that comes with operating an airplane. There is no better time for those considering a career in aviation; the demand for pilots has grown significantly over the last couple of years, and many airlines are willing to hire certified students straight out of flight school.
Orlando is a city with the highest concentration of Florida flight schools. ATP Flight School, Delta Connection Academy and SunState Aviation Flight School are just some of the facilities that offer training.
Besides Orlando, ATP (Airline Transport Professionals) Flight School has locations in Ft. Lauderdale, Daytona Beach, Jacksonville, Panama City, and Stuart. ATP boasts that they have the most successful hiring ratio for students who complete their courses–giving those graduates the competitive edge. ATP’s training program includes a written test that students must complete before moving on to in-flight training.
The written test takes one day. During the test, students check in at 8:00 am to pay the fee ($295) and begin studying using ATP’s computerized self-paced software. The entire day is reserved for preparing for the test that begins at 6:00 pm and ends at 9:00 (although most finish within an hour and a half).
After 50 hours of supervised flight time, certification takes only two days: Day one is dedicated to two 2-hour actual flights with a qualified instructor and some time in the flight simulator, as well as some review of practices and airplane manuals. Day two is mainly dedicated to a flight check, where an instructor accompanies students on a test flight after giving them an oral quiz–all of which should take about five hours. The price of classes/certification is $2,495 and can be scheduled during any day of the week.
SunState Aviation flight school offers more affordable lessons that take a little more time to complete. With their accelerated flight program, students immerse themselves in three weeks of intense ground and in-flight lessons. In contrast with ATP’s program (which presumes students have past experience–military or otherwise), SunState’s program cultivates pilots from scratch. While a $10,000 program seems a little drastic, the price includes all 50 hours of in-flight training, Cessna rental, exam fees, and even hotel accommodations! Once everything is put into perspective 10 grand is far less than what anyone would spend on a four-year school.
The Delta Connection Academy is accredited with the Accreditation Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology, so they are able to help students earn financial aid for their flight lessons. Those who qualify can get 100% of their tuition, housing and living costs covered, which makes the Delta Connection Academy one of the most affordable Florida flight schools.
